Blu-Ray-Spot UK

Interesting article found here which suggests that Blu-Ray sales will overtake the sale of standard definition DVDs by 2012. This further blurb sounds really interesting as well:

Still, with studios ramping up Blu-ray releases to keep up with increasing demand for HDTV sets and introducing features like BD-Live interactivity and 3-D capabilities, greater consumer awareness of Blu-ray and falling prices for its players are likely to feed demand that will help Blu-ray disc sales cross what many analysts expect to be the $1 billion threshold this year.

BD-Live interactivity and 3-D capabilities... eh? I have to admit, the few films I've seen on Blu-Ray I've been thoroughly impressed with. It seems to be a really versatile format, and the picture is stunning when you marry it with a decent HDTV. I guess I still have a few more years before I have to start worrying about a domain change though eh?

Insane Sale on DVD Boxsets - Alien Quadrilogy

Hey readers,

You know back in the day, there was a film franchise that was seriously cool and intense. Awesome in fact.. dare I say.. ABSOLUTELY FUCKING KICK ASS!!!!?

In recent years it's been tainted with some god-awful crossover films - but back in the day before all that shit, there was only.. Alien!

Quite simply put - they amount to the greatest Sci-Fi Series of all time (yes, even better than that one in the galaxy far far away). The original Alien was a masterpiece in suspense and terror, while the second one provided one of the best sci-fi action films of all time. The following 2 films were not quite as good, but were still entertaining additions to the series.

The best possible collection for these films is the Alien Quadrilogy - Which contains a whopping 9 discs, with various cuts of each film and an embarrassing amount of extras. It comes in absolutely gorgeous packaging, and is often found really cheap online.

Well, I really can't believe this, but it's currently selling for... £11.99!!!

£11.99!!!

£11.99!!!

£11.99!!!

*Ahem*

This comes courtesy of HMV, where they have up 70% off of Boxsets (they weren't kidding!)

Seriously if you don't already own this DVD, and you don't now buy it for that price, then simply put.. you are a moron. You are an utter imbecile and need to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask yourself why your life wouldn't be better with the awesome power of Aliens. Quite frankly, I don't want you reading this blog if you don't want this DVD set - go on, piss off! Piss off with your Alien contempt! You have no place here!

Ok.. I'm joking (not really). I do understand that Aliens aren't always for everyone, so you should check out the other DVD's in the sale. For the scaredy-cats amongst you, I've picked out this rather fetching Musicals Boxset - The Essential Musicals Collection - 9 Classic musicals for only £24.99!

My previous post on the Alien Quadrilogy can be found here.

Happy shopping people - and remember..

£11.99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where to Download Movies Legally

Here's an interesting tidbit I picked up from today's edition of thelondondpaper. It's a comparison of the best places to download films legally, which is kind of relevant to this site. LoveFilm came out on top with 4/5, not surprising given that they've really been pushing it on the LoveFilm site..

Anyway, check out their conclusions here. "In the game of legal film download one-upmanship, our American counterparts may have had the upper hand, but with the launch of Apple’s new film download service and iLoaded.com in the past two months, we’re catching up. Here’s a round-up of what’s on offer for cinematic computer buffs.

Apple

Cost: From £3.49 to rent and £10.99 to buy The set-up: Apple has 700 films on iTunes, and it has nifty suggestions – all with mini-trailers. The site is easy to navigate, and films automatically save to iTunes. Rentals must be watched within 48 hours of when first viewed. Highs: It’s the best service for Mac users. Film choice isn’t vast, but varied. Lows: The set-up box to screen on your TV is expensive and, apart from Juno and Cloverfield, the selection of new releases is limited. Verdict: 3/5

iLoaded

Cost: From free to £17.50 The set-up: Currently 200 films to download, with a further 800 promised by the end of the year. Films are sorted by genre, and you’re given a choice of downloading files to suit various formats for your iPod, PC or mobile. Highs: The checkout and website is speedy. Lows: Although they’ve got hot films such as Cloverfield, the overall selection is fairly standard, with a few hangover films – ones you don’t mind watching but wouldn’t pay for. Also, Mac users are stuffed – most of the content is incompatible. Verdict: 2/5

LOVEFiLM

Cost: From £1.99 to rent and £5.99 to buy The set-up: LOVEFiLM takes a bit longer to set up than the rest – but for PC users, it offers the most choice with 2,500 titles to rip into. Highs: LOVEFiLM’s biggest hook is that you can burn your download to DVD. Rented films have a much longer life – a week – and you can watch them as many times as you like. In most cases they will also post you a DVD version. Has a good selection of new releases; Forgetting Sarah Marshall and What Happens In Vegas are available. Lows: Most of the content is DRM (digital rights managed), so you can’t use it on Macs. Verdict: 4/5

And the rest...
skyplayer, 4od:

Channel 4’s 4oD offers films screened on Film Four, and ones it owns the rights to for rent-only, starting from £1.99, but only for PC users. BSkyB’s Sky Player offers box-office films, such as Sweeney Todd, for free. If, however, you are a Sky user but don’t have films in your set-up package, you can hand over £3.99 to rent one of the 30 box-office titles. Picture quality is top-notch.

Silencio old man - it's the Juno DVD!

I've just bought the fantastic (and highly acclaimed) indie comedy Juno which came out on DVD Today!

This is a film that did really well at the Oscars this year, and yet (confusingly) received a fair amount of backlash afterwards. I guess a lot of people don't like to give comedy its due credit eh? Well anyway I find it all a bit silly myself, as this is a consistently funny comedy, with plenty of wit and bite, and yet just enough heart. I saw it on my return flight from Canada, and was almost tempted to watch it again on the same flight as it's such an easy film to sit down and enjoy.

A lot better than 'Knocked Up' incidentally

Play and HMV have both got it for £12.99 which would probably be your best bet. I decided to go with HMV as they have a "Juno HMV exclusive" (I don't know what it means either).

Interestingly Amazon have a dedicated Juno Store with a deleted scene and other stuff - Check it out.

Base.com - DVD.co.uk No More!

Ooh hello readers,

An interesting tidbit here. It seems that DVD.co.uk will be undergoing a rebranding, and becoming... Base.com!! I don't know why to be honest, sounds a bit rubbish to me. Maybe they got a fantastic offer for the url and they couldn't refuse, who knows? Anyway, the new Base.com site will be launched on Monday 9th June.

Keep your eyes peeled, there could be some fantastic offers to tie in with the rebranding!
