Apologies for the lack of updates recently - Work has been pretty damn crazy of late, but I've still been keeping up to date on the ol' DVD front, and have many many updates planned soon!
So, what have I been up to? Well, for one, I bought the First Season of (and have been eating up) the absolutely fantastic 'The Wire'. Well recommended, intelligent TV drama which is seriously well written and made. And it's never too late to get into it, especially when you can snap it up for just £15 here!
As well as that, and to get onto the point of this post - I took a further foray into ordering Region 1 DVDs from Amazon.com! See my previous (extensive) post about buying Criterion DVDs here, and stay tuned for my next update where I shall be talking about another Criterion DVD I bought. Hopefully I won't be slapped with an annoying duty fee this time, but you never know..
ANYWAY, what I'm trying to say is..
THE SMASHING PUMPKINS HAVE A NEW DVD OUT!!!!!
*ahem*
Anyway the new DVD is called If All Goes Wrong, and includes a documentary chronicling the bands residencies at the 'Orange Peel' in Asheville, and The 'Fillmore' in San Francisco last summer. As well as this it has a seperate disc with pure concert footage. I'm really looking forward to both parts to be honest - both seeing how the new members have fit in, along with their thoughts, and hearing Billy and Jimmy and their thoughts on where the band are, and the new directions they'll be taking. From all accounts the setlist isn't studded with major hits, and uses more sedate, ballad tracks instead - but it does have a few firm favourites in there including 'Starla' and the new guitar epic 'Gossamer'. I saw this track played at Sheperds Bush on their first return to the UK and it was truly something to behold - BwaaaH baawaah BwwwaaaH!!
Like an idiot I stumbled in and pre-ordered the American version way in advance, not realising than it's out in the UK less than a month away now.. doh. Anyway I would highly recommend you getting it - If All Goes Wrong Region 2 is at HMV here.
Seriously, how can you not love this band? Just check out the 1979 video below, showing them at the height of their powers back during the Mellon Collie years..
And if you like that, then I highly highly highly recommend you get their Greatest Hits DVD. Without a doubt this is my number one most played DVD in existence (I'm listening to it right now in fact!) It's the DVD that got me into the band in the first place, and a perfect place to start - and an absolute bargain to boot!
I LOVE YOU THE SMASHING PUMPKINS!!
Anyway, I'll stop being a ridiculous squealing fanboy now..
Peace out,
- Jimmy
